The Lamu Archipelago

The islands of Lamu retain unique and rich Swahili culture with many of its inhabitants sustaining their livelihoods from the sea.

Though modernity has crept in, the island remains resilient against cultural change.

Below is a brief exploration of life on Kiwayu Island during my pilot research expedition in late 2020. This island, situated in the Kiunga Marine Reserve, upholds itself as one of the most pristine natural ecosystems on the Kenyan Swahili coast.
